Tucked away in a shop house around Tanjong Pagar, is this little gem. The Whole Earth Vegetarian Restaurant is the only restaurant in Singapore that specializes in Thai-Peranakan vegetarian. It is basically a mix of Chinese, Malay and Thai flavours rolled into one. If you think that’s too much, you would be surprised at the simplicity of the dishes that come out of the kitchen. This is no run-of-the-mill vegetarian restaurant that churns out oily dishes that are made with mock meat. Instead, it tries to to bring some Thai-Peranakan dishes to the table without the use of meat or losing any of its flavour. And I think it has succeeded.
The appetizers served includes picked papayas and crispy bean curd skin which is usually finished before we even realise it.
This new dish has nice flavours albeit its a bit too sticky.
The Assam Pedas has a good balance of heat and sourness. It really goes well with rice.
The Broccoli with Braised Monkeyhead Mushroom is one of their signature dishes. The Monkeyhead mushroom is lightly fried to bring out the flavour of the mushroom. Its texture is slightly spongy.
This is my favourite dish in the Whole Earth (vegetarian restaurant). Lol. Its done very well and you can’t really tell that its not meat. The pieces are crunchy and coated with this sweet and sour sauce which i just love!
My friends liked the Penang Rendang with its thick curry. It tastes a bit meaty but its made of mushrooms!
I liked the restaurant and would definitely go back. However, prices are slightly on the high side for the portions.
